Shopify vs WooCommerce: which is right for your store?

A clear comparison of ownership, operating effort, flexibility and cost for brands choosing an ecommerce platform.

Practical thinking for ambitious teams

Shopify and WooCommerce can both support a successful online store. The better choice depends less on feature checklists and more on how much technical ownership the business wants, how unusual the buying experience must be and who will operate the store after launch.

The short version

A clear comparison of ownership, operating effort, flexibility and cost for brands choosing an ecommerce platform.

01

Start with the operating model

Shopify combines hosting, core commerce features, security updates and support within a managed platform. WooCommerce runs on WordPress and gives the store owner more responsibility for hosting, maintenance, plugin compatibility and performance. A team that values predictable day-to-day operation may prefer Shopify; a team with dependable WordPress expertise may be comfortable owning more of the stack.

02

Compare flexibility in context

WooCommerce provides deep access to the underlying site and can suit businesses with unusual content or integration requirements. Shopify is more controlled, but its themes, apps and platform tools cover a wide range of mainstream commerce needs. Do not pay for theoretical flexibility. List the customer journeys, catalogue rules and operational integrations the store genuinely requires, then test each platform against them.

03

Calculate total cost, not entry price

WooCommerce itself is open source, but a reliable store still needs hosting, development, security, backups and ongoing maintenance. Shopify adds a recurring subscription and may require paid apps or transaction-related fees depending on the setup. Compare the cost of operating the store for two to three years, including the team time needed to keep it dependable.

04

Think about growth and ownership

Both platforms can handle meaningful growth when implemented well. The practical constraint is often operational complexity rather than product count. Consider who will manage products, promotions, content, integrations and support. Choose the system your team can confidently run, not simply the one with the longest feature list.

05

A simple decision framework

Choose Shopify when a managed commerce platform, reliable administration and a broad app ecosystem matter most. Consider WooCommerce when WordPress is already central to the business, technical resources are available and control over the underlying system creates a specific advantage. Before committing, document essential requirements and prototype the riskiest workflow.
